I a newbie at this. I bought a DS-7108N-SN/P nvr and a WD purple 2tb drive. When I log into the nvr and try to format the HD it fails at 50% every time

You will need to attach the drive to a PC and delete any logical drives
If you have used this drive before.
If it's a new drive there is something wrong, as installing a new drive should bring up the format option on boot of the nvr.

It's a brand new drive. The instruction say to format in the NVR . I hooked it up to a computer and formatted it that way and it still fails when in the nvr

Did you for mate it fat? If you did and it's still fails return the drive don't waste time on it, if it's like this from the start it may have issues and you don't want that from a hard drive.
Check if the SATA/Power cables are attached firmly. Also you could change the power adapter of the DVR if you have a spare one.
