I have a DS-2CD2032-I camera with firmware V5.1.6 build 140412. Under Configuration/Video I am offered three video Resolution options:
1280*720P, 1920*1080, and 2048*1536. The only resolution choice that comes close to producing a properly proportioned image is the 2048*1536. The other choices produce a distorted image with compressed vertical dimensions or expanded horizontal dimensions. Is this supposed to be the resulting image produced by this camera? Is there any way to fix the image to make it natural in proportions?

I can't use the 2048*1536 resolution setting because bandwidth constraints of my set up require a lower resolution setting if I want to get a frame rate of 15fps or greater. The 1280*720 setting works fine except for the distorted proportions.

The sub stream always a properly proportioned resolution setting of 640*480.

They will all be in proportion when recorded. The problem is that your app or whatever you are viewing it on is stretching it to fill the screen (I assume is 4:3). The actual recording will be fine.

What bandwidth constraints do you have? These cameras are designed to record the main stream but live view sub stream when remotely logging in.

Del Boy,
these have all different aspect ratios, so which are you saying:
* The pixels will stay square but the coverage of the imager will be different (e.g. the 1920x1080 will cover less of the image vertically than the 2048*1536).
* All resolutions cover 100% of the imager, which implies that the pixels won't be square in some modes - so these mode will look stretched even with proper software.

Yes I'm saying if you have a 2048x1536 monitor, it will simply stretch 1920x1080 from 16:9 to 4:3 to match the 2048x1536 monitor. And vice-versa, 2048x1536 will be squashed to 1920x1080. This is with the official software. Pixels aren't square yes (it's not quite like that).

I think if OP sends me bitrate settings etc and info about bandwidth restrictions I can fix this anyway. It's not really efficient to view main-stream via remote laptop etc over the internet.

Thanks for your response. Let me give you the background information about how I have my camera set up. This will help explain my bandwidth constraints.
My camera is powered by PoE. Rather than run a long ethernet cable from my router I am using a TP-Link Powerline adaptor. This is the source of the bandwidth constraint. With my RESOLUTION set to 1280*720P, Bitrate set to variable with max bitrate of 12000, frame rate set to 20 and I frame interval set to 20 and Video Quality set to "Higher" I am able to obtain a crisp, clear image with a constant frame rate of 20 when viewed either in my browser or with my SecuritySpy software on my iMac. If I increase the resolution one step higher or if I set Video Quality to "Highest" then I immediately see instability in my frame rate, varying between 8-15 fps.

As Laurent has stated, this video resolution looks stretched no matter how I view it– via browser or SecuritySpy app. And all recorded video or individual pictures are stretched as well. Even viewed within my Synology DiskStation with Surveillance Station all images are distorted.

Let me know if you need more information about my configuration.
