Can't use USB port on NVR anymore.

Getting the hang of it

I have a NVR5416-16P-4KS2E NVR downstairs.

There's two USB ports in the back. One is used by my mouse. The mouse doesn't move anymore.

The other USB port is used by an ethernet to USB adapter.

If I connect the mouse to a PC, the mouse works.

There's also a USB port on the front of the NVR. Mouse doesn't move when connected to that port either.

Also, I have a USB extender connected to my upstairs TV, and another mouse upstairs. The upstairs mouse doesn't work with the NVR either.

Any suggestions? I tried contacting my installer. He said to reboot the NVR. That didn't fix it.

Have you tried the mouse in the port occupied currently by the Ethernet to USB adapter? I'm thinking maybe the other USB port lost it's 5VDC power.

Re: that "Ethernet to USB adapter."....the NVR doesn't have a built-in RJ-45 female Ethernet port marked "LAN" ?

I have now tried that USB port that was connected to the Ethernet to USB adapter.

Mouse still doesn't move.

I've have now tried all 3 USB ports, the two on the back and the one in the front.

In each case, the mouse appears to have power, because the optical tracking lights up.

It just doesn't move when I try to use it.

Also, I'm not sure what the Ethernet to USB adapter is for anymore. I got this installed in 2018. So there's some things I forgot why they are the way they are.

And again, if I connect my mouse to a PC, it works.

2018 is a good run for an NVR, might be time to bag that one, and get something newer.

I think there is a mouse sensitivity slider under system/general, make sure that is turned up. You could also plug a keyboard into one of the USB ports to see if that works or a thumb drive to see if the ports are dead.

Many older NVRs wont recognize, (dont have the drivers for) USB wireless mouse(s)

Plug a wired mouse in and it will likely work

I have been using a wired mouse. This whole time, since 2018.

It just doesn't respond when connected to the NVR. I tried all 3 USB ports.

The optical tracking does light up.

If I plug the mouse into a PC, the mouse works.

If I plug a keyboard, what could I expect to happen with the NVR interface, when I use the keyboard? Seems like the interface is mouse based.

Nothing. Yes it’s mouse based

That’s why I use it on initial setup for the 3-4 screens needed and have never gone back to the direct machine interface in 8 years

Once setup use the web/browser interface which is much better anyway

The keyboard can work just like a mouse, use tab to change shift + tab back and enter to select and you can type where needed. It was just to see if the USB controller was out on all ports

Did not know, never tried it

I'm ok with the PC app Smart PSS for most things. But for searching, I preferred the direct NVR interface.

Can you still get the web / browser interface to work? After I enter the IP address and log in, it says different things depending on what browser I'm using.

If I use Firefox, it says install plugins first. I do, restart the browser, same thing.

If I use Chrome, Edge, or Internet Explorer, it says to install the Chrome App. But then the Chrome app was discontinued in 2022 anyways. So that doesn't work.

Also, disappointed that not only does my wired mouse not work on the NVR, which is downstairs. But I had a USB extender and had a mouse connected to my upstairs TV. And another mouse upstairs. That doesn't work either. So I can't use the interface when viewing from the upstairs TV either.

Edge in IE mode works best/most often for me

If you're using AI search the NVR direct method is great. Otherwise I use SmartPSS Lite 99% of the time

Tried a wired keyboard on one USB port. Wasn't recognized.

As opposed to the times when I've tried a mouse, I only tried one USB port with the keyboard. With the mouse, I had tried all three USB ports.

Also, when you did use the keyboard, how did you get past the unlock screen part where you have to draw the pattern to unlock the screen?

Thanks.

I was finally able to use the web interface after logging in. I could see the live view.

However, Playback / searching did not work for me.

You will need edge in IE mode or plain IE to use all of the the controls in playback

I use an older 2023 version of SmartPSS lite but the newer version should work fine.

Legacy SmartPSS has some security issues with P2P and is discontinued. It’s bloated anyway
