Getting the hang of it

Hello

When I moved into my new house I made a mistake of getting crappy dvr instead of researching :)

I ended up getting this:
Q-SEE Premium Series 8-Channel 1TB HDD Surveillance System with (4) 700 TVL Cameras

It kind of works ok but dvr is very limited and flaky.

I'm thinking of replacing it with Blue Iris setup. The only thing I'm not sure is how to connect the cameras to the computer. I can either get a network based capture card or internal capture card. I want to run this on windows 2012r2 server or windows 10 OS.

Can anyone recommend a solution that works for my setup?

thanks

Alex

Welcome to the forum..internal capture cards that work with blue iris are hard to find and expensive..first thing to try is see if you can stream to blue iris direct from your dvr. I would recommend saving your money and upgrading to ip cameras...even 60 dollar 720p cameras will blow the analogs away..
You can also find used axis or grandsteam encoders for cheap, but toss good money after bad.

Thank you for reply.
That's also an option but problem is they are already mounted. i will have to find ones that closely match mounting of current cameras. And then install them in same locations. Was trying to avoid extra work. I think when I had these installed, installer used cat5e cable so it will be easy enough to swap these out with POE network cameras and get a POE switch in my networking closet.

Do you happen to have any model numbers of axis or grandstream encoders?

How are the cameras mounted? I cant imaging not being able to mount new cameras over the old ones. Trust me the improved resolution will be worth it.
A member here purchased the axis 7014 for 52 dollars

The grandstream is the Grandstream-GXV3504-IP
Honestly, do it right, replace the cameras. The 200 extra dollars over the encoder will be well worth it.

Cameras are mounted using camera's provided mounts. It shouldn't be that hard. Was just trying to see if its worth buying new cameras or a retrofit will work by getting video server. Would this work? http://www.geovision.com.tw/english/Prod_GVVS14.asp

Any recomendation on HD Ip camera that works well with BI? ($100 range per camera)

Thank you again

That particular geovision is not on the list, but that doesnt mean it wont work...
Look at 2mp hikvision turrets...there are lots of threads discussing the hikvision cameras...

Yep. Thats pretty much what i'll end up getting. Plus I also want to replace bullet type with dome type in few spots because of the lack of coverage.
Just picked up Dell T20 server that was on sale on dell, planning on using it for BI not sure if BI is going to run in a vm or on physical hardware itself.

Thank you

What processor do you have in that server? Remember that blue iris needs a decent cpu for multiple hd cameras. Its best to run BI on a clean machine, no need for vm.

Intel Xeon E3-1225
It will have 16 or 32gb of ram and I can install ssd if needed for caching if BI uses it. Storage will be on 4tb NAS hdds.

Yes, that will be just fine...16gb is more than enough...ssd can never hurt but not needed, though they are so cheap, its nice for the os drive...

yep, I already have 500gb that i don't use. Reason i wanted to go with vm is to remove it from being hardware dependant. So incase something happens to the server i can migrate it to my second T20 which is running esxi

You can easily export the blue iris config file and back it up and be up and running in no time.....the simpler the better.

Also true. KISS and i can export saved videos to a nas for safekeeping incase drive craps out

Yes, If you wish you can record to both local drives and nas simultaneously by cloning the camera in BI and setting one to record to the nas. (you can hide the clone so you dont see doubles on the screen)
