So I have been doing some testing and finding some very strange things.

2431. Both cams set to max (6144 Kbbs) max resolution max 20 FPS. Smart codec off, h.265

  • Using CBR it outputs bit above set bitrate (i-frames set to same as fps so keyframe every 1s) and functioning as intended.
  • Using VBR (6, best) it is actually causing a higher bitrate than CBR (even static scenes day or night). For example it is going beyond the rated specs (6144) and spitting out 7500-8000 sometimes peaking higher.

5442. Cam is tested with various bitrates, max resolution max 30 FPS. Smart codec off, h.265

  • Using CBR it is functioning as intended. For example setting to 8192 kbps spits out under 9000 (more because i-frame set to every 1 second perhaps)
  • Using VBR (6, best) it is throwing out a VERY LOW bitrate (in comparison to what 2431 does) . For example set to 8192 its throwing out around 3500. Is this working as intended for VBR ? Perhaps.

So in conclusion, with BOTH 5442 and 2431 set to VBR 6 Best, the 2431 ends up throwing out bit above spec oddly yet the 5442 ends up using a MUCH lower bitrate.
This difference in bitrate ends up being VERY noticeable in the streams especially when zoomed in. This discrepancy is also noticed in storage space (using Milestone)

Final thoughts:

2431- I am happy with VBR because hey 6144 is pathetic bitrate so I can squeeze out a bit more performance over CBR haha.

5442- This one I'll set to CBR and up the bitrate to whatever I feel like (still testing). It can go as high as whopping OVER 9000 ! (actually 20400 kbps) so gonna need some testing here to see how it works.

If you look around there are various threads about this, if I remember correctly it’s hoped that a firmware update in the future may fix it.
