Sounds terrible.
I read that BI is stable for some but that's not my experience. What's the alternative? Hardware NVR? More expensive cameras with onboard AI and email notification?

BI stability depends on the build number. If it's unstable choose a later build that others have found stable. I find going back often doesn't solve the issue so forwards is the only way.
