I'm about to build myself a Blue Iris box and have found a sweet deal on a local computer store offering a 6th Gen Intel Core i3-6100 @ 3.70GHz (2 core / 4 threads) and Gigabyte GA-H110M-A motherboard for $129. I would combine that with 8gb of memory, a 120gb SSD and a 3TB or 4TB WD Purple drive running Win10/64 Pro. The CPU Passmark is 5491 and I was wondering if it would be stout enough for three of Nelly's H-Series 2.8mm 4mp turrets and possibly one 4mm 4mp bullet? All running at 1080p with motion activation.

I'm not a fan of the Realtec LAN port (Network Engineer by trade) but for this low of volume, it should be OK.

I have an old system with an i5-2300, 12gb ram (was 6gb until a week ago), Nvidia GT 640 (so no hardware acceleration), 120gb ssd, and about 15tb of storage running BI and serving as an Emby server/HTPC.

It has 3 1080p Hikvision cameras, a 4MP Dahua, two 960p TOP 201 cameras, all doing continuous recording direct to disk, with motion alerts.
The CPU runs along at ~45% utilization unless Emby starts transcoding something that is being played back from a client.

You probably won't find many who would recommend an i3 for a BI server, but I doubt that it would have any problems with the number of cameras you are talking about.

I'm currently using an i3-2100 for one 1MP camera at 3.5 FPS, one 1MP JPEG camera at 1.5 FPS, three 1080p cameras at 10, 6, and 10 fps. Using hardware accelerated decoding on all but the jpeg cam, motion detection on all, and direct to disk on all. It is running as a background service on Win10 at 13% utilization. (this is also a 2 core / 4 thread i3).

So my gut tells me you will be fine with that camera load, even if you run them at 4MP instead of 2MP. Not sure if you will be able to use higher than 15 FPS comfortably at 4MP however. To put it another way, this morning I had a friend order one of these for his 3 camera 4MP system that I have set to stream at 15 FPS, and I expect there to be plenty of headroom in case he wants more cams later. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-Thinkcentre-Edge-E72-SFF-Core-i3-3220-500gbHDD-4gb-Win-10-Pro-/131859820344?hash=item1eb3752f38:g:7YcAAOSwmmxW1zie

In hindsight I should have looked harder. Damned ebay filters. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkCentre-M71E-SFF-Core-i3-3-3GHz-4GB-1TB-Win-7-Pro-DVD-Desktop-2007003/401153722090
