If the product or its documentation doesn't lead you to do the right thing I don't think I would call it user "error". The documentation for these cameras is not great. The operation manual is more of a reference on how to do something but not why. It doesn't say that the IVS Global Setup can be a requirement for IVS to work correctly and it lacks any form or troubleshooting information. It's really only through advice from people like you that these things are made known. Or maybe I'm just not reading the correct documentation?
Remember that these cameras are not regular consumer products and are meant to be marketed to "video surveillance professional" who know, beforehand, what settings need to be adjusted and what the ranges they might need for those adjustments. Add in the fact that the manuals are written by people who are not native English speakers and it gets a little messy. The thing to do is to experiment and try. Asking questions here can save a lot of time and effort, too.

While I agree with you on that, we are not the user that Dahua and Hikvision is targeting. They have made a business decision to target the professional installers and authorized distributors of these cameras. I suspect many of them have been trained on all the settings or have installed enough to know what to do. Call either company up and they will tell you to talk to the vendor you purchased from.
Contrast that with consumer grade stuff sold at the big box stores. You can call a Night Owl or Arlo or Reolink or Lorex or Amcrest and speak to a representative (now whether they can help you or not is another story), but they will not tell you to talk to Best Buy where you purchased it...
We are just fortunate enough to be able to get our hands on these. Dahua wiki that you can found online can be helpful in many instances.
If you look thru this thread I think you'll find that I did. And I'm still here, so I didn't throw in the towel.
As for the Dahua Wiki or docs, how hard would it be for them to say something like "To get the best results with IVS in scenarios x/y/z make sure you perform the Global Setup"? Whether professional or otherwise, we all benefit from good documentation. If the Andy's of the world get lots of returns because the docs are not good then they should fix the docs for their own benefit at least.
The IVS Global Setup was not in previous versions of the software. I don't understand why this calibration needs to be performed at all if I'm not using an object filter. A tripwire should trigger whether it's being crossed by a rabbit at 5 yards or a dump truck at 50 yards, on the flat or on a slope. This is the way it used to work.

The trucks are mid green and they appear against the grey asphalt because I am looking down a bit of an incline from about 40 yards away. The one thing about the trucks is that they are slow because they are stopping at each house, so they may be edging across the tripwire.

Try an intrusion with appears and crosses - I have found that to be the most consistent. I have a few cameras where I use a tripwire for a specific reason, but the intrusion with appears and crosses seems to be the ones that work best for me.

Also, don't place the tripwires too close to the edges of the FOV, it requires a little time to recognize an item before it reaches the tripwire.
You can see/test this by watching the feed live with the web gui, and turn on viewing the trip wires.

Agree with @wittaj the Intrusion zone may be better for you.
Tripwires have a 3D element to them. Unless straight on inline from the camera, an object can “slip under them” for lack of a scientific explanation. I try and draw them so that they hit the car on the midpoint (bumper) or human at the knees if you can visualize that...
@looney2ns example is like mine. More or less straight inline with the camera. But if off at an angle, think about repositioning the line on a severe angle to match the bumper height
FYI for anyone looking for the latest Dahua firmware for this camera you can download it using this link. I have been using it for a month or so and see no regressions from previous versions.
For the firmware i will spend some time later after Black Friday promotion, right now the latest new fw not work perfectl for the early 5442 productions.
The chips issue, make the 5442 has a little change on the hardware since 2021
@Zimberto What issues were you seeing with the latest Dahua V2.840 firmware? I've been running it on two IPC-T5442T-ZE and on an IPC-HFW5241E-Z12E for nearly two weeks and have not come across any issues. Note that I do not use IVS on these at the moment.
