Dahua turret camera on exterior wall - always base up?

Hi. Apologies if this is covered somewhere I haven't seen (or a downright stupid question), but should Dahua turret cameras placed outside always be mounted base up? While the camera ball itself seems to be sealed, the housing is not. If mounted directly on a wall (without using a wall mount or junction box), it would seem even if caulked around the base that rainwater could still enter the housing gap and then pool inside the base against the wall - which sounds like a bad thing...

So should the base always be up to allow any water that enters to drain out and away from the wall/eave/whatever surface?

Or would it be OK if the mounting location was sufficiently protected from the elements?

Thanks.

Thanks @samplenhold . So any water entering the gap would drain out through the cable cutout... (Assuming it doesn't find its way into the box...)

If I should definitely use a box, is there any preference for this kind of box with the camera base parallel to the wall vs. the wall mount where the camera base is up?

Thanks.

Some like to drill a 1/8" or 1/16" hole on the bottom of the junction box to allow water to escape should there be any ingress.
