If I remember correctly the scale from 0 to 1400 and at some point someone did the math and proposed each number Represent X millimeters but it was not really known this was accurate.

In this case it would be:
equivMM = (12mm-2.7mm)/1400*currentSetting+2.7mm
Set it to zero and you get 2.7mm set it to 1400 and you get 12mm.
algebra really isn't that hard.
