Sure, i can explain.

The NVR i use is just a cheap 4108-8P (PoE) from Dahua, not supported anymore due to end of life. I bought it just to have it setup to record 24/7, and to be placed somewhere hidden in the house, far away from the rest.

I call it piggyback, because it rides piggyback on the rest of the system. :D

2 MONTHS!? Recording 24/7?! With 15 cams?! Wow. Thats crazy! Do you have like a 20 TB harddrive?! Lol. Thats insane.

I have two Hikvision 8 port NVR's. One has 10TB and the other 12TB of memory. With the 10TB I checked to see how far I could go back and it was around 9 weeks. The 12TB is a new unit(upgrade) so I need to wait maybe another month and I will see how far back I can go.

We were at a local expo yesterday where Seagate had a display set up showcasing their new 14TB SkyHawk hard drives. Pretty cool to see progress from a 8TB a few years ago to 14TB

I like the idea of a hidden "piggyback" NVR. Can you have a camera connected somehow to record both to a Bi computer and to a drive on a NVR at the same time? I can't picture how that would be set up.
 
I do all cams 24/7 + motion. Mainly because I've had a few instances where the motion didn't trigger for some reason, so I want the continuous footage -- but I want the ease of reviewing that motion provides. It's all through BI -- haven't gotten into NVRs yet!

For an IP camera, it's just a camera attached + video server which then connects to a network so any authorised device can connect to it and view/record the stream.
It's the same as how you could have BI recording the cameras but then also view them on TinyCam or other mobile app.

It would be different if the cameras were all connected directly to the recording device (cctv recording to dvr?) but, someone correct me if I'm wrong, these recorders can also be network connected and provide a stream to other devices on the lan.
 
Yep. At least my Dahua DVR’s and XVR’s can..
