I've messed around with min object size, contrast and object size exceeds settings, yet I still can't seem to eliminate false positives with steam from an HVAC vent. The steam blows right to the camera almost every time.

Other than a duplicate camera with less sensitive settings, what are some things others have done?

I have one of my cams the has steam from dryer vent it catches and I use the built in line crossing to the camera to trigger an event in BI. This works pretty well as the steam on mine doesn't cross the line in the direction I tell it I am interested in, it goes the opposite way. You can do this now in BI using zones too.

You could also try cancel shadows along with the proper object size and contrast to go with it. If you can see through the steam, it might cancel it as just a brightening of the background. If the steam is thick enough though, there may not be much you can do other than the one suggestion above.
