Face Detection

Getting the hang of it

Okay i was planning on placing cameras on each of my doors and utilizing face detection but i might have thought its more than what it is. I know face detection triggers on the camera seeing a face and will record, alarm and snapshot. I also thought that it isolates the face only in the snapshot. Does anyone have the knowledge? I've googled and i can get tutorials on setup but they're nothing that i don't already know.

it dont work well enough outdoors to bother with it

FD sucks, from my experience.
With the camera inside, in my shop, it hardly ever did an FD on me walking into the room.
When placed outdoors, it had several false FD events. It saw faces in the shrubs when the leaves moved in a breeze. It saw a face on my siding when moving shadows was just right. And FD at night was suckier!
Here's a post of someone's front door cam and it had FD events in a parked car's finish;
Partners parking mistaken for art by NVR

The real deal killer for me: Enabling FD disables IVS (trip wire, intrusion zone)
IVS is MUCH MORE dependable than FD. And more useful.

If you want to have an event (snap, email, record) when someone approaches your door, IVS is the way to go.
Also, FD doesn't work when the face is obscured (hoody, sunglasses, cap pulled down low)

Don't waster your time.

I also tried FD, unfortunately it had never worked on any cam of me. But i didn´t spend much time on it, i can´t see an advantage against IVS.

If it isolates the face in the snap as ive seen some others do Hik? Id use it to cover my doors.

@Fastb when you played with FD did you set it in the camera interface? Ive seen the videos where you draw the box to set up the parameters but on web gui or nvr i dont have that option. Is it camera based only or is it old firmware?

@JFire

That was a while ago.
I saw FD ability in some cams, but not the NVR.
Then did f/w upgrade to those cams and NVR.
I think I configured FD using both NVR native ui and Cam ui.

Is FD camera based only
Yes, it's not done by the NVR.
The NVR needs to be "Smart" aware, to handle the functions in the cam. So that in NVR, under "Event", there are features of FD, IVS, etc.

This post has some info that might be helpful:
"Smart Detect" feature of Dahua camera!

Again, using FD disables IVS. That's too high a price for me, since FD is pretty lame.

I was asking more along the lines of what the snaps looked like. Was it just a general snap or was it isolating the face. My side porch is so small and with the shade screens i dont get much of a view of anything else really. I'll play around with it and report back. 20170321182932.jpg

Aha!

I certainly didn't get just the face, as seen in the snapshots you posted above.
Instead, FD caused an "event" and if a snap was sent, it was of the complete cam FOV.
Just like an MD, tripwire, or intrusion zone snapshot.
No lines, no boxes. (just like the tripwire snaps don't show the lines)

I'd have to go into "Playback" to see the green box around a potential face, and then spot that green box turn to red.
"Aha! That's where the face is!", I'd think.
And it would be a dark green shrub, with bright sunshine, causing a very dappled scene, with bright parts and dark parts.
Or on a wall, with moving shadows from branches moving in the breeze.
I'd generally conclude "yeah, that sorta looks like a face, but shit!"
It was as creative/crappy as seeing faces or animals in the cumulus clouds above..

Then FD would miss real faces. Arggh

Well i aim to find out what the face list is for in the playback and how to get it to work. To me that where it should be isolating pics of faces that it detects. I already know if its not a straight on angle its probably not going to detect the face.

I've never seen a "face list". If you find where it's hiding, plz let me know.
As far as "isolating pics of faces", please let me know where they are hiding.

For IVS, I'd like to a "tripwire list", with the "isolated pic of" the actual trip taking place. Cropped pic, or pic with box. That would be useful as well!

JFire,
Thanks, I'm gonna look later.....

@Fastb i found this but it doesnt help me figure it out. I do believe that face list is not a face detection thing. I believe that it's just something the nvr can do from video in general....

@nayr you're smather than me...any chance you can figure this out? Im pretty sure it's a playback feature, not face detection.
