Foscam recording - Is it mkv or mpg?

Hello,

I'm using a Foscam C2M, which is producing video files with extension .mkv. However Mediainfo, mkvalidator.exe and ffmpeg they all say, that the file is an MPEG-PS, so the correct file extension should be .mpg.

I reported this to Foscam support, but they insist, that .mkv is correct and that there is no bug in the cam's firmware.

I would be happy, if I would get feedback here from the community about your results. Must not necessarily done with a C2M, but at least with a Foscam cam. I will help convincing Foscam support.

Thanks in advance
Joachim

What is the issue you're having with the video file, regardless of it's type? VLC media player will play MKV file types as well as all MPEG variants.

There are a few programs like Avidemux, which will not open mpg-files with extension .mkv. Of course I can rename them. But it's more a pragmatic question. File extension and file content should match.

Named after the Russian "matroshka" nested dolls, Matroska files are often called "MKV files"

Been around a long time and as Tony said VLC has beed able to play them for years.
