Generic NVR vs. Hikvision NVR

Probably a silly question, but wanted to confirm. I noticed many posts talking about monitoring Hikvision cameras either by a PC or by a "Hikvision NVR"....If one goes the route of an NVR, is it mandatory to use a Hikvision brand NVR or would any generic NVR work?

I would assume that any generic NVR would work for basic monitoring/recording, though it may not allow you to utilize all of the advanced features?

If you stick with all the same brand you have better compatibility with a functions not just the liked functions available with ONVIF.
