getting emails to work

I fooled with this feature a while back and it worked fine for a while using gmail. But it quit working and I've never really jumped back into fixing it. At the time it was gmail causing the problems.
What's the best way to setup getting email alerts?
 
Lots of issues in the past with G-mail regarding SMTP, ports used, 2 factor authentication, less secure apps, etc..

looks like there was a firmware update for the nvr, but my camera is on the latest version. I tried using as old yahoo account, no luck. I know you're supposed to turn off less secure apps in yahoo, but I don't think that option is out there anymore.
