Andy just sent me this version and said it had improvements to night image. I'm going to test it and see how it works.

Hello 105437,
I have done an immense amount of tuning using a very similar dahua 2Mpixel camera IPC-HDW5231R-ZE and a 4Mpixel IPC-T5442T-ZEB . I use my cameras to capture license plates on cars that pass my mailbox on a suburban street. You will need to set a slower shutter speed than I use. My shutter speed is set to avoid swamping the sensor with highly reflective license plates. The speed limit on my street is 25mph but occasionally some a-hat drives by at 50mph. I capture very close to 100% of all license plates. Some license plates are very dirty and some states have non-reflective license plates--these are the challenging ones.

I use an IPC-HDW5231R-ZE V2.800.0000018.0.R, Build Date: 2021-07-07 and an IPC-T5442T-ZEB V2.840.0000000.13.R, Build Date: 2022-01-10. For night setting I use Contrast:55, Sharpness 25, Shutter customized range, shutter: 0~1, Gain:0-40, AutoIris on, 3D noise reduction set to on, grade:5, IR Light manual 100%, H.265, smart codec off, resolution 1920x1080, Frame rate:30,Bit rate type:VBR, Quality 6, Max bit rate customized set at 7424, I frame interval:30, stream smooth set to 1, Audio AAC at 64000, All non essential services disabled. The 5442 model camera uses nearly the same settings except a shutter set to manual 1/250 of a second and 3d noise reduction of 9, Video VBR, quality 6, Max bit rate customized at 20480. Of course I use substreams to help blue iris survive the high bit rate video when it does motion detection.

The trick for best night-time shots is to use the highest shutter speed possible and still be able to view the scene, reduce image noise and sharpening processing in the firmware. Hence sharpening set to 25, more is not needed and more will reduce image quality. Also reduce 3d noise reduction to 5--any more produces blur on moving objects. I try to have a balance between noise and resolution of fine detail--do not try to get the noise to go away. If all noise is removed then a lot of fine detail is also removed.

The police detectives in my city absolutely go ga-ga when they come by to see my clips. They have never seen such high-quality night-time clips and especially high quality shots of license plates. I am sort of famous within the police department (the guy with the cameras); even the police dispatcher has heard of me. I have four different views of the street. I have another special trick which is a camera in my mailbox and I have gotten face shots of mail thieves when they come by at night to steal mail.
