I have been running BI for nearly three years but in the last couple of weeks I've updated some of the external Foscam cameras to Hikvision. I now have the following cameras in use:

3 x Hikvision DS-2CD2355FWD-I
2 x Foscam F189
4 x Tenvis

My server spec is:

Operating System
Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard 64-bit
CPU
Intel Xeon E3 1220 @ 3.10GHz 43 °C
Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology
RAM
16.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
Dell Inc. 015TH9 (CPU1) 30 °C
Graphics
Standard Monitor (1920x1080@60Hz)
Matrox Standard VGA Graphics Adapter (Dell)
Storage
465GB DELL PERC S100/S300 SCSI Disk Device (RAID)

I have just added more RAM to increase it from 8gb to 16gb and I now note the memory usage is around 10gb but with the cpu is around 95%.

I'd like to get some more cameras added but your recomendations on hardware would be appreciated.

What are the FPS of the cameras set to? Are you using Hardware Acceleration? What else have you down to bring down CPU usage? Have you turned on direct to disk. See this Optimizing Blue Iris's CPU Usage | IP Cam Talk
In BI they were set to 20 but I have reduced this down in the camera to 12. Today, I have had installed another camera and the poor processor is running around 99%. I have reduced the bit rate but my processor does not support Quick Sync. I don't have direct to disk enabled.

I have been looking at another PC which i would look to use instead of the Windows 2011 Server that BI is currently installed on.

The spec of this PC is:

Dell Optiplex
i7 processor
16gb RAM
2TB HD
Windows 10 Home.

What are your thoughts on this, please? Presumably, i can upgrade from Home to Pro?

i7 is a meaningless term...provide the exact processor..windows 10 pro will have more control over updates

I have asked for the exact spec but currently waiting for a response.

Is an i7 better than an i5 though, for example?

No it can be worse, much worse.
Thanks, so what is the deciding factor which makes it better or worse? Presumably the numbers after it and the application the machine is running?

yes, the generation and the specific model...there are many threads discussing this...some dont have quicksync, some are low power cpu's...

so as an example and looking at an i3-2120 vs an i5-2400, are these comparable in terms of age and performance?

they are the same generation and are both standard desktop processors with quicksync so the i5 will be significantly more powerful...note quicksync on second gen is limited to 1080p cameras.

But looking at latest specs, they seem to be quite old now?

It's not the physical age, it's how well it processes video and how well it "plays" with BI.
