Hikvision camera selection 5mp or 8mp?

Hikvision have some great stuff and used to be top dog for a long time.
Dahua upped their game and hikvision upped their prices and it is now more difficult to get their good gear from reputable sources at a reasonable price.

The hikvision 4mp PTZ is cheaper than the Dahua 2mp.
4x zoom vs 3x etc.
That’s why I bought two!

The hikvision 4mp ptz is a poor camera in comparison to the 2mp starlight cameras on low light performance.

The sensor is 1/3 on the hikvision at 4mp in comparison to the 1/2.8" 2mp

The dahua also has it's IR on the outside of the dome if it's the same camera I'm thinking of.

It's not really a good comparison and that probably why the hikvision is slightly cheaper

The Hik is newer than the Dahua, that’s why it’s cheaper. I am sure when the newer Dahua comes out, it’ll be better.

The Dahua is only slightly better in low light.
Let me emphasize that, slightly.
With slow shutter enabled, the Hik is better overall, but above 4x slow shutter, there is a noticeable ghosting on similarly contrasted moving objects.
The IR on the Hik is also outside the dome, and the emitters are larger.
They have the exact same aperture and the Hik uses a Much larger lens and dome.
The Dahua gets bad dome distortion at the edges.(a byproduct of a tiny lens crammed into a tiny dome.)
The 1mm difference in CMOS size does help the Dahua, but again, only slightly.
The only reason I wasn’t completely satisfied with the Dahua is because of the edge/dome distortion and inferior motion detection.
The Dahua also has an awesome built in mic, which i kind of miss.

I can't comment on the specific cameras as I don't have neither version so your first hand experience of them is better than mine.

I don't personally use domes because of the things you mention I prefer the turret style where possible.

I do hope that one of the brands actually manage to get a 4 or 8mp version of the starlight/darkfighter series to work properly at night.

The ones I've seen so far that look good on the spec sheets seem to leave a lot to be desired.

The latest 4mp dahua starlight+ model that's just been released and reviewed on here I was left quite underwhelmed by the low light performance and feel it should be better.

There was an awful lot of ghosting and artefacts on the sample captures.

Also o do like hik cameras it's what I started off with and do still use.

The problem I've found with them is they've made it more difficult to get proper international versions at a good price. Especially here in the UK.
All that seem to pop up is last gen tech at high prices.

I also feel they've been ablittle slow to market with their low light stuff

That is very true.

In this day and age as daft as it sounds simple sells well.

If I am not mistaken and hopefully someone can confirm, Dahua have cams stated as Starlight and shouldn’t be either like Hikvision. Both can be as bad as each other.

I don't know about branded as starlight. But theres plenty of cameras with duff specs listed for the camera.
