Are Hikvision 3Mp cameras normally 2Mp by default and you have to select the 3Mp option?

I wanna say "yes, dumb but true." (I prefer the higher rez 4:3 view -- ymmv...)

you'd think i could remember, having set up over a dozen of them in the last few months.

I believe pozzello is correct, they arrive in 1080p by default, if i had to guess, its because some NVR's cannot handle more then 1080p and they dont want folks to think there is an issue with the camera...

I doubt many diy installers know this and boast about there 3mp cameras when in fact they are defaulted to 2mp :-D

Yes its 2mp..though hikvsion 3mp cameras are not any clearer than the 2mp since most of the extra pixels goes to the increased vertical field of view.
