78 series is a model intended for sale / use in China and can be found on the Hikvision web sites for errrrrr... China

The menus are of course are in Chinese, but they can be obtained with firmware that's in English from various sellers, like this highly recommended one. http://www.aliexpress.com/store/638300

There are a few differences between the 76 and 78 series... the main one is that the 76 supports 'smart' cam features.

Yes, there are slight differences in the firmware of European and Chinese, but if you can, you can activate all the necessary functionality.
Especially in the firmware 3.0.10 ;)

I bought the 16ch version - DS-7816N-E2/8p from this source:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Hikvision-NVR-DS-7608NI-SE-P-PoE-NVR-Hikvision-8-Channel-Economic-NVR-CCTV-Network-Video/1849140465.html
and have been very pleased with it.

English and Chinese menus - but, as has been mentioned earlier - only CN firmware available, from the hikvision.cn website.
I haven't (yet) tried the slightly updated (3.0.10 from 3.0.8) firmware as I don't have a copy of the 3.0.8 firmware to fall back on. And the supplier has not agreed to supply me a copy of the 3.0.8 firmware that they may have used when they sold the item.
I speculated that it was aimed at the Australian market as it had an Australian mains cable supplied.
But it works very well, has been 100% stable, and even allows non-Hikvision cameras to be added, both ONVIF and RTSP connections.
