How large a drive can I use in my NVR?

Hello,

I have a rebranded Dahua NVR with 8 channels and 8 built in POE's. (Security Camera King)
It has a 2gig hard drive and I'd like to swap in a 6 gig WD purple drive. The manual for the NVR
states Storage up to 8 gigs and that's it. Nothing specific about the maximum drive size. Would I be safe to swap in a 6 TB drive in place of the 2 TB drive that came with the NVR?

Thanks,
Tubac

How many drive bays/connectors does the NVR have? If one bay then the 6TB drive should be fine. Two bays might require more research into the actual model specs to determine if the "Storage up to 8 gigs (TBs)" is per drive or total for both drives.

If your NVR is older than 2 years old, its a high possibility you will be limited to 4TB per drive to give you the 8Tb. I have a few of them I got from Nelly's a few years back and the max is two 4 gig drives.

Yes, General rule of thumb for the NVR's is to divide the the bays by the max capacity, If you go on the dahua site the newer 8 channel NVR's have two drive bays and are limited to 16 TB of storage and clearly state each drive is limited to 8TB.

Even tho it has been reported here that the new 10TB WD purple work in machines that claims only 6tb max.
YMMV.

The manual of my NVR is a bit ambiguous . It just says "Storage: 8 TB."
Not 8TB per drive. SCK's technical guy stated that they have tested
drives from 6-8 TB's and they work. The thing is I purchased a 6 TB
drive from Amazon on their say so, but figured I'd check with the
experts here before opening the package. Based on replies to this thread so far, it may or may not work. And so my conundrum...

The Good thing about amazon is if it don't work you can send it back. When you install it check and see if it really formats out the 6TB. This has been a interesting conversation.

Yes.
I would install the drive and see what happens. You can reference the conversation with the tech to justify the return. Two 4TB drives are just a bit more than one 6TB.

Today I received a 8 TB WD purple for another setup, I decided to try it in 2 older 8 Channel NVR's (rebranded Dahua's) one was a 8 channel poe and the other was a 8 channel non poe, both are over two years old but firmware is updated. The drive took in both cases and formatted out as expected. I cannot say for sure how it would record but given the systems saw the drive fine I will assume it should be fine.

I can confirm that the 10TB WD drives work. Just installed one yesterday with a 6TB already installed for a total of 16 TB. I checked it this morning and it is recording to the drive. I had been wondering this for a while too. I doubt I'll replace my 6TB with a 10TB though. I have 10 cameras on constant recording so I only get a few weeks of recordings before it writes over itself.
