How many ports/channels for my NVR

I am looking to install 7 or 8 cameras in and around my house. All of the camera would be PoE and routed to an 8 or 16 port switch, then to the NVR. Would I need a 8 port/16 channel NVR, even though I would only utilize (I think) one port on the NVR? I would like the ability to expand in the future.

I guess I am just confused on the terminology. Best I can tell, I need as many channels on the NVR as I have cameras, regardless of how many ports being utilized.

Channel != Port

Channel == Camera Feeds

Buy a 16 Channel, minimum.. it will max out at 16 cameras, regardless if it has 1 port or 32

I have a 16ch NVR w/1 Ethernet Port going to a Switch then through a PoE Midspan and then to the Cameras..
