How to Expand NVR ports?

Let me first apologize, I'm new to this forum and how all forums work in general.

I have a Flir 8 channel NVR with PoE. I believe it's a DNR 200 series. I have all my ports filled up, but I spoke to someone the other day who mentioned that I could have more than 8 cameras on my NVR. Possibly with a PoE switch?

Welcome to the forum..there are several versions of that NVR..4/8/16 channel...if you have the 8 channel then that is the maximum amount of cameras it will support...you cannot add more by using a poe switch...

I thought that the software on some NVRs allowed for expansion? I just don't know how to set the hardware up.

Yes if the NVR is a 16ch then you can..but if you have the 8ch you cannot (unless you have some serious hacking skills)...You indicated that you have 8ch model and therefore is locked to 8ch.

Oh alright. Why can you do it on the 16ch and not the 8ch? Is that with all 8 channel NVRs or just the specific brand/model I have?

The 16ch is no different. The maximum amount of channels are locked by the firmware..so if the NVR allows for 16ch then you can have 16..the nvr doesnt care if you are plugged into it directly or a poe switch...same with 8ch...same with 4ch...that is the max the NVR is going to allow..all nvr's work this same way.
