Our cat got out of the house one night for about 10 hours. It ran under our deck and did not want to come back in. It managed to survive the night, despite the dangers from the hillside (there was a coyote walking back and forth on the dirt road that runs through our property).

I think the indoor cat needs a diet so it can run faster and catch the fox ;)

Years ago, we had a cat, that was very protective of HIS back yard. We had a half acre lot, and we could see down across the back yards 8 or ten other house's that were on our street.
Any dogs in the area that you would see coming across those yards, they would get to our yard, and go out around it's property line!
Cat was a Burmese, weighted 26lbs, but wasn't fat. He hated being in the house, so he was always out.
I saw him chase off German shepherds and other large dogs out of our yard many times. But the everyday dog residents knew to stay very clear. :)

We had a little stray that came to us declawed. Never got very big. Just a scrawny little guy. But he ruled the area. He had a great bluff move where he'd turn sideways and do the arched back cat thing all puffed up and race directly toward whatever was there making the most godawful noise you've ever heard. I never saw anything that didn't run from that. lol
