I currently have he 4MP Dahua IPC-HDW5442T-ZE / IPC-T5442T-ZE installed. There is a review by Wildcat_1 praising the quality of the 8MP Dahua IPC-HDW5842T-ZE / IPC-T5842T-ZE. I'm intrigued to see how it handles for my situation at night.

A quick search on Dahua turned up:

Dahua IPC-HDW5842T-ZE-S2
Dahua IPC-HDW5842T-ZE-S3

Running through the specs, the difference between the S3 vs S2 are:
FPS: 25/30 vs 30
SD: 512GB vs 256 GB
ROM: 4GB vs 128MB
RAM: 2GB vs 1GB
Min Illum: .0008@F1.8, .0004@ F1.8 [vs] .004@ F1.4, .0004@F1.4
Max Aper: F1.8 vs F1.4
Close Focus: 4.92ft vs 3.3 ft
SMD3.0: Yes vs No??
Gain Control: Auto vs Auto + Manual
Power (POE): 9w vs 7.3w

If I'm understanding the above correctly it appears the S3 model is better, at least w/ RAM/ROM ;P . I couldnt confirm if EmpireTechAndy has this model in stock (still waiting on a reply). The Amazon item he sells here doesnt state which series.

FTR, I prefer purchasing through Amazon rather than Aliexpress for piece of mind.

Those that have the 5442, which is 4MP on the 1/1.8" sensor, and also have the 5842, which is 8MP on the same size 1/1.8" sensor have shown here that at night the 4MP is the better option.

Which goes along with our mantra to chase sensor size not MP and that usually 2 cameras on the same size sensor will result in the camera with less MP outperforming the higher MP since the sensor would need more light.

Now with that said, the 5442 series is also now on the S3 chipset and performs way better than the previous 5442 versions. I would go with the 5442-S3 over the 5842-S3 all night long.
