If you want a nice still image, yes, but motion will be a blur. But set it up for motion and it needs light. But I can make any of my IP cams look like daytime at 3am for a still image - motion is what matters.
I'm afraid you think wrong because almost all Dahua full color cameras use LED light.
But then it isn't completely dark with the LED light on....

To my knowledge, in the 5442 there is only one model that uses white light LEDs. Using white light LEDs is not in the dark, is it? It is with enhanced lighting.

I'm looking at the HDW5442TM-AS and trying to compare it to the HDW5442T-ZE model. I'm having a hard time understanding the difference between the two. It looks like the T-ZE had a varifocal lens but I'm not sure if I get that model would I be giving up something I'm not seeing on the TM-AS model. Confusing....

The major differences is the lens speed with the T-ZE having a slightly "slower" lens because of the varifocal lens.

Read the many reviews of both cameras posted here on this form.
You maybe confusing IR LEDs with white light LEDs. Dahua has a few cams that use white light LEDs to enhance the picture much like some people use a flood light.
I'm looking at the same cameras also and see the same models because I need to buy 3d camera.
My HDW5442TM-AS is EOL
So I'm trying to select between HDW5442TM-ASE , HDW5442T-ZE and HFW5442T-ASE-NI.
HFW5442T-ASE-NI has max aperture F1.0 without IR.
I'm sure that HDW5442T-ZE is better then HDW5442TM-ASE because F1.8 vs F1.6
The HFW2831T-ZAS-S2 is good camera also but 3d camera I'd like to buy 5442 series.

Fixed lens will always be better min illumination than variable focus of the same model

This is absolutely nothing to worry about. EOL does not mean it is not going to work. It just means that Dahua made a small change and added the 'E' on the model number and the HDW5442TM-AS is no longer being made.
Here are night videos of the 2831 and the 5442 with just IR. It pretty much shows what everyone else says about the 5442 being superior at night.
I am still fairly new to this and I have a long way to go before I understand it all, but it seems strange to me that my 2MP 2231's have a bitrate of 190-200kB/s and my 4MP 5442 is only at about 245kB/s and that's after I upped the bit rate to 2000 from the default which I think was around 1500.
I know there is a lot of talk about the 5442 firmware right now, my cameras which I just received this week came with V2.800.15OG004.0.T, Build Date: 2020-11-23.

IPC-T5442TM-AS will be brighter than the IPC-T5442T-ZE because different lens.
The smart IR down the bright of the pics, the original dahua firmware is very bright, maybe you can make test on the none smart IR one.

The main differnece is the ZE model is using motorized lens, so you can adjust it easily, but if you can calculate the view angle, use the IPC-T5442TM-AS is good to go.
For the night pics, the fixed lens is a little sharper.

Are you using VBR for your bit rate? If so it changes based on light and motion. You cannot compare bit rates of two cameras set to VBR.
Is it possible to setup in 5442 minimal not fixed shutter speed for instance not more thatn 1/60 in the day , because if the wheather will be sunny then fixed 1/60 shutter speed lead to too light picture ?
