is there a way to tell if you received 2.8 or 4mm by looking at the camera/lens?

For whatever reason, when comparing my 2.8mm dome to my 4mm 2532 they both appear to have the same wide angle view. Is there a way to tell what they are by looking at the lens?

Is the 2.8mm a hikvision?
what resolution are you running each cam?

That's how I compared them, didn't mount it but held one at a time at the same location.

If the show the exact same view then they are both the same lens...you would need to do some measuring and calculations to determine which one it is..what do the labels say?

The 2.8mm shows a pretty wide view whereas the 4mm shows a tighter view.

As fenderman says, have a look at the small white sticker on the unit, it has the focal length on there.

If they stickers still say they are 2.8 and 4mm I'll try and find a comparison between 2.8mm and 4mm. But it probably was a mislabeled unit.
