I got it working finally.
I did two things:
Add push "route 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0"
To server.conf.
Then I noticed the server said "Assigned IP 10.0.8.1" so I connected to 10.0.8.1:81 and it worked! Thanks so much for the help, I really appreciate it.
I am guessing it's the latter that made it work but I have not tried removing the push line and just testing with the IP.
I am still not sure why the IP is different, it must be a configuration thing in OpenVPN.
