For 2 tours a great guy from New Jersey would lean out of his bunk above me aboard ship about every night and ask me simple spellings like "house" and "purple" and "wreck"...he was a VERY poor speller. He would be writing his wife a letter, I think. He also had difficulty reading because he'd ask me stuff like "How do you pronounce P-R-E-G-N-A-N-T ?"
We stayed in touch for a few years after getting out of the service and he went on to work for...you guessed it...the USPS!
