Long Time Lurker, Never Heard That Before Right?

Hello all, I'm finally gotten around to say hi.
I joined two years ago this month and before that, I stopped by once or twice to do some quick reading.
I've always wanted a security cam system since my early day of employment. I worked store the size of Walmart Super Centers back in the late 70s and one of many of my jobs was to run the cameras following possible shoplifters. And I never could figure out how this company could afford these high tech systems for each store, it just blew my mind.
I became really good tracking and recording shoplifters and spent many hours doing so. Sometimes when a crew of professional thieves would be working the area, we'd have an off duty highway patrol office on the clock.

So you can say I was kind of spoiled when it came to quality equipment. So when I picked up a Foscam IP cam (early model, 420 res would be an over statement) I was really disappointed. It pretty much just blew up and stopped working most of the time. Then I learned it was shipped with that issue of bright lights would take it down and I had it looking out the window. I ended up tearing it down and re-flashing the chip and now it runs most of the time. It still reboots or lock up randomly, but not very often. It's also been on the front cover porch for about a 6 months and still going strong.
Also have two Logitech desktop cams pointed out to watch the backyard. A 920 and a 930 I believe and both are 1080. I'll try to upload a small sample of each.
I did pick up Blue Iris 3.0 since I started using the Foscam. And still learning new things.

Now I want to add a good, GREAT system to keep an eye on things around here. I'm home all the time mostly anyway, just more of a hobby than anything. Plus keep tabs on my three rottweilers. Also thinking of putting some cams out in the woods around the house to watch the critters.

So far, I have collected a dedicated computer, (a Dell OptiPlex 7040 SSF) and also just bought a Netgear 24-Port Gb POE (JGS524PE-100NAS).

So that's where I'm at and don't really know anything about what all is needed after that. So I'll will have questions coming. Specially after the Chinese New Year holiday is over with.

And thanks for what I have read on here and any further help you may give.

Thanks fenderman, I do have that on my shopping list.
Also on the list: (please feel free to comment)

WD Purple HD 4 TB. Scared to get larger for the $$$ But it is needed to be larger? I do want (I think) 4k. Although I'm looking at 1080. Can't stand digital zoom.

Tips on the Cat5-6? Outdoor, indoor, plan to do both in the future.
Build my own cables/connections? Certain brand you all use?
Plus, POE I'm guessing cannot go thru a wall connection. I have my house wired in each room. It could be convenient to move a cam for a temp purpose????
Many any things NOT to do???
I did down load the PFDs pinned here. Can't think of anything else for now, question wise anyway. Only other comment might be I might by a manged POE switch
since I'm not the sharpest on networking. But I can usually get it figured out. I keep telling myself it's really not that hard, but I never remember anything and have
to learn how I did it in the first place.
Thanks

4k cameras will have terrible low light and night vision unless you spend crazy money on them. ...Dont be fooled by megapixel ratings. If you have a wall plate plug poe will pass though...why not?
