Low Power Consumption PC-Based NVR?

Hello!


I like the benefits/pros/flexibility of a PC-based NVR, however, what I don't like is the cost to run a PC 24x7 (e.g., https://www.google.com/#q=how+much+does+it+cost+to+run+my+computer+24x7).


Do you have any thoughts or experience in PC hardware set ups, with a focus on low power consumption, resulting in lower operating costs? Keep in mind, this would be for a 4 POE camera set up (so I don't want to spend 000's). My motivation in posting the question is that I don't want to pay $30/mth for power to run a 500W box under my stairs closet.



Any help with this would be appreciated...Google seems to have failed me lol.

Welcome to the forum..
Understand that its almost impossible for a modern pc to consumer anywhere close to 500w...the power supply may be rated 500w but that is not the consumption..(obviously some crazy overclocked gaming rig will draw a few hundred watts)..
A modern haswell pc like an i5-4570 or similar idles at 30w, and at 30 percent load is around 50-60w..

My PC with the dual monitors turned on runs about 200w (2A). It runs around 50% CPU utilization 24x7. I have a 256GB SSD for OS and a 1TB for storage locally. With the monitors off, it runs about 100w (1A). It is an i7 3770k, no overclocking.

My media server (plex) in the basement is a Xeon E3 1220v2 with 2x 1TB mirrored for OS and 4x 2TB RAID5 for storage on a dedicated Adaptec RAID card, it pulls about 200-400w (2-4A) depending on the load. The drives and all the fans for cooling add to the load. I need to make some adjustments to this setup to allow for more savings. It is only used a couple hours a day max, so a lot of waste here.

I have a couple other servers running Atom D525 CPU and with dual green drives, they only pull about 30-45w each (.3-.45A).

Where I live, 1A equals about $10-12 per month.

A lot will depend on the equipment (drives, CPU, etc).

Those are very high numbers even with all the drives...are you using graphics cards? how are you measuring?

The i7 3770k I measure on my UPS. The media box is measured on an APC rack mount power bar. The media box has onboard, just running plex server. My BI machine has a GTX 550 ti.
