If your a newbie, your gonna get frazzled at first. the " brain unit" can be an NVR like a Simple Amcrest NVR with 8 powered ports.
Getting a Small form factor Personal Computer and installing Blue Iris might be a stretch for you at this point.
Either way you need to connect the NVR to a TV screen or a PC monitor to view the cameras probably via HDMI.

It’s odd that you started your own thread and recommended the nvr and a cam. Are these going to capture the license plate?

Flint gave you three links that are an NVR, cable, and a cam that many of us use for LPR.

Whether or not it caps a plate is all up to how they are deployed. That is what this thread is all about.
