Meth head tries to rob my car and home.

Getting the hang of it

I was enjoying a lazy Sunday when I heard the bang on the door, I checked the camera's and found this low life trying to take what's mine. I need a better alerting system I think, push emails don't seem to be cutting it.

The cops got him a few streets over, he was wanted for aggravated assault, had been using and was carrying meth, and had recently gotten out of jail. I would have hated to think what would have happened if he had gotten inside and surprised me.

Wow, on a Sunday in the middle of the day, glad they got em, fool would been in a body bag of he broke into my house. You should at least have push notifications, and really as I build my security and home automation system in plan to add sirens and stuff.

Yes, I should, but I don't fancy the idea of putting the BI server out on the Internet with a port forward, I need to do some more research in that area and see what options are available for security.

Wow, I did not know this. I was under the assumption that the app needed to be in constant contact with the BI server to get the push notifications sent. I just tested it and it works great.

I'd be interested to know as for HIKVision I believe the App has to be in contact at all times.

hmjgriffon was correct, no firewall changes needed, the push just worked. I've setup different alerts for different cameras now.

What does BI push it to? The BI app or something else?

BI pushes to the mobile app. Works nicely and is almost always faster than Gmail notifications. I get emails with pictures and push whenever someone comes to my doors.

It's also nice to have a dedicated 24/7 monitor set up in an easy-to-see place to make it habit to watch when things are happening outside or give a quick glance to if you get a push notification. It might save you from opening a door unexpectedly to scumbags like this. Especially handy in a home office or living room/kitchen area where someone hangs out often.

I'm glad nothing happened to you or your car. There was a robbery a few blocks away here...hoping they never plan on making it this way.

Blue Iris can be configured to play a sound through the PC's speakers when it detects motion on specific cameras. Could be helpful if you don't get many false alarms due to weather, bugs, etc.

Also @Kawboy12R is right about a dedicated monitor being nice. I have one right next to my front door. My permanent front door monitoring tablet

Do you have to have the app connected to the BI instance all the time, either through VPN or Port forwarding? As for HIKVision NVRs you do need that connectivity.

Good question. I've never tried it without a VPN or having BI's remote port already forwarded. I suspect it'll work without either but haven't tried it.

Android / Apple push notifications are sent to Google / Apple servers and from there the message is sent to your phone. You won't get pictures or video via a push notification alone though (due to size limits). So you'll get the notification, but not be able to view the alert clip unless you connect to your VPN or forward BI's web server port.

I use the push notifications as a backup and a unique sound so that the email with pics stands out as important. Not just another ad, thread reply notification, or whatever. The email usually follows within 5-10 seconds or less.

He was away from his bike for over a minute. It would have been great to have hidden or padlocked his bike during that time! I use BI to send via SMTP a text to my AT&T iPhone5s, arrives in less than 8 seconds on average.

I hate thieves of any kind, they should be dealt with like murderers, you burglarize someone's house and get caught, you get hung on TV for all to see. Certainly here in Florida if you get caught in the house you forfeit your life.
