Hi all,

I am trying to build a camera system around the house and I have decided to go with the HikVision
HIK-2CD2342WD, now I want to build a PC based NVR to run the system. However, I am not so sure what specs are needed for the PC to handle the system smoothly. And also, as the PC will run all the time, 24/7, so will I be able to use it for something else such as watching youtube, a bit of online gaming, watching movies, without affecting the camera system running in the background?

This is my 1st post in this forum and I am glad that I found it.
Would be great if anyone can help me with this as well. Very Appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

This is a good place to start:

I'd advise perusing the Blue Iris forum and all of it's Sub-Forums....There's a lot of info that can be gleaned there. This thread in particular is a 'Sticky' in the Blue Iris forum:

And don't forget, the search function is your friend ;)

Hi, thanks for your help. I did use the search bar but didn't really get what I need. went thru the post in Blue Iris forum as well but not much that I can find, like only, not enough for me to get the idea of what to build. But thanks alot anyway.

FIRST, determine what software you will be running, how many cameras, what resolution...THEN determine the pc.
Dont build anything...search the forum for optiplex and elitedesk..building is a complete waste of money.
FYI, there are at least 20 posts discussing systems..you are not looking hard enough..one of them is a STICKY!!!

Would you mind to help me with some helpful keywords for my concern?

Sounds like you want an all in one machine. As everyone say, determine how many cameras you'll need. For the NVR it's better to overbuild now so you don't build another months later. Especially if you're not dedicating the system for NVR only.

Software: Blue Iris (most popular and priced right)
CPU: I7 6700 (I started with an I5 6400, it was enough but still running @ 50% CPU capacity) I have at the moment 10 cameras with 20% CPu usage.
Memory: at least 16GB
Hard Drive: SSD HDD for OS, 120gb minimum and another regular HDD for your storage

those are themain component that you should be concerned about for performance.

Depending on your budget a lot of guys use the older i7-4770 with success. Find yourself an Optiplex 7040 with an i7 6700 or a 7020 with an i7-4770 and be done with it.

Hi, your reply was exactly what I was looking for. I am planning to get 8 of the 4mpx camera. About the PC, what I got were really close to your recommendation. I got i7-6700, 16gb of ram, 1 500gb ssd for OS and 4tb of WD purple to store footage. Now I am thinking of what GPU to get.
About the software, Blue Iris seems to be the best option, right?

I'll echo choosing the software first, as that's the most logical starting point with building out. I use software known as Bluecherry -- Linux based on the server, but with a Linux/Windows/Mac client for other systems. Works very well.

I have six cameras, all 3 megapixel, all 10 FPS recording 24/7. The average server load is about 0.05... so it's all but asleep at any given time. That's running on a low wattage i3 3220t processor with 8GB of RAM, though it averages about 800 MB in use. I built this server 4 years ago to be my NAS (which it still is, so it's doing some other operations besides NVR tasks) and have only been using it with the NVR side of things for the last year, though even after adding this additional workload it hardly seems to notice.

So... yeah. Choose the software first, then build around that. :)

If you're going to use Blue Iris then you don't need a GPU because BI won't use it. However, Blue Iris will use the Intel HD Graphics accelerator which is part and parcel of the i7-6700 Skylake processor. The i7-6700 is all you need for Blue Iris...any GPU accessory card is a waste of money with regards to enhancing Blue Iris performance,

I think I got the hardware I need already, now i think its even more complicated with what software to go with.

Run Blue Iris software Johnny...it's very powerful and very easy to run...and it's very inexpensive IMO...considering how effective and powerful it is.

Hi, I am using iVMS-4200 from HikVision for recording, setting, but if I go with BI, I dont have to keep the iVMS-4200 running at the same time right?

Thanks
