Network/Cable Testing?

The last time I looked at my router, I have about 57 devices that access my home network...

I have run all the cabling myself and I use a basic 'network cable tester' to check to see if the cable is terminated properly

With that many devices, I would feel better if there was a better way to test my network for problems. For example I have home server that runs Plex for our movies and every now and then I will get an error that it can't stream fast enough

I don't want to spend a fortune, but I don't mind paying more for quality tools. What else is out there that I could use to make sure my network cables are up to speed?
 
i use a net prowler cable tester it has a loads of useful features its not cheap though, and an iPad app net analyzer
 
The simplest thing you can do is variations of ping. ping -t runs until you hit crtl-c, throw a -l 4096 in there and you can send bigger packets.

There are some other software tools too. Your NIC mfg may have one you can download then there are things like
IET - IP and Ethernet testing Tool

or expensive options like:
IxChariot | Ixia

a good hardware tool also works well.
