New BlueIris Setup - I have some questions

Warning... "Rysty windows user ahead" ... I'we been using linux for the last 12 years at home.


I just installed BI on a Dell Optiplex 5070 - i5-9500 / 32G Ram / 512G SSD (system) / 12TB WD 121PUR (video) - OS Win11 Pro

I have installed BI on the C:\ (SSD System drive) , and have formatted the WD S:\ with 1024KB (1MB) Clustersize.
I have a few questions regarding the Disk setup (Storage tab)

Currently i have :

Win says WD is 10.9 TB formatted.

db    - C:\BlueIris\db         -  db on SSD , as per advice below.
New - S:\BlueIris\New          - Managed folder - Exclusive use    - Size 9800GB
New - S:\BlueIris\Stored      - Managed folder - Exclusive use    - Size 0GB
New - S:\BlueIris\Alert          - Managed folder - Exclusive use    - Size 1GB     - Alerts set to 1GB , as per advice below

I read hat Stored should be set to 0 , and not used if on the same drive.


What about the : limit clip age ? - Currently i have 30days + Delete on New , and the same on Alarm
Optimally i'd just like to "Fill it up" , and then delete "Oldest" ... How to do that ?

BI5 db should go on your fastest drive (SSD).

Recordings can go on WD. No need to store recordings to "New" folder first, then moving to "Store" folder. Best to store recordings in their final folder from start.

1 GB is more than enough for the Alerts folder.

What does managed drive mean vs unmanaged ??
Since i will only use the WD for videos - is my "Managed Exclusive" selection ok for New/Alerts

Read the help file to learn about managed vs unmanaged. The help button in the lower right of most settings panels will bring you straight to the relevant section.

Simply uncheck the box left of "Limit clip age" and then it will do what you want (fill up then delete oldest to make room for new stuff).

Thanx for the help button hint ... And the helpfile is actually quite good

I'd like to run BI as a service .....
Should i use my "login admin user" , or create a separate BI Admin user ?
I'd prob. prefer a separate BI Admin user if it doesn't FSCK the system up ....

I haven't used windows since XP ...
Do i just add a BI user, and set it with admin privs , or ....

I just configure it to use my regular windows user account to run as service. I think the main purpose of giving it a user account is so it has access to mapped network drives, which it would not have when running as the local system user or whatever it is that services use by default.

Well i already made a BI user
But initially M$ wanted it to be a "Real account" w. e-mail & all.
I fiddled a little , and "somehow" got it to make a "local user".
Gave it a UID/PWD , and then changed the role to administrator.

Entered the UID/PWD in the BI "Run as a service" popup.

After i rebooted , i saw BI was running in the tasklist ...
So i hope/suppose this is working too.



BI seems to keep asking me about if i want to download the AI/Codeproject stuff.
Do i want to do that ?
I mean can i use it for something meaningfull if :
1: My CPU is an i5-9500
2: I have no plan to install a Nivida CUDA GFX card.
3: The BI PC will be blocked from accessing the Internet, as soon as i have finished setting it up.

HW - Decode
Under Cameras Tab , i have selected HW Accelerated decode = Intel@
Does that work under W11 ... I mean i saw something about Mem leaks in the W10 Intel GFX drivers.

H.264 or H.265
I would like to run H.265 if possible nothing speaks heavily against it.
But my only reasoning would be less harddisk space.
I think i read here that the hdd saving was neglible , is that correct ?

Can BI handle both H.264 & H.265 cams at the same time ?

My PZT Cam (Cheap Chinese) - Can only deliver H.265 or H.265+ , not H.264.
Right now it's set to H.265 , and the stream decodes fine in VLC.
So i'll have to use H.265 for that one.

Common advice anymore is:

• Configure BI to use sub streams for all your cameras.
• Don't use HW decoding. When you use sub streams, HW decoding can actually make CPU usage go up. It doesn't hurt to try, but you will probably find it doesn't help to have it on.
• Use H.264. H.265 does have a theoretical advantage, but in practice most of us find that H.264 and H.265 streams produced by IP cams perform very similarly in terms of perceived quality vs bit rate. Many of us prefer H.264 because we find H.265 produces a tiny bit more blurry artifacts. H.264 is also more compatible (plays better in web browsers when you export a clip for example), and in theory H.264 is more efficient to decode when hardware acceleration is not being used.

BI can indeed handle H.264 and H.265 cams at the same time, no problem. You can even have the main stream be one codec and the sub stream be another codec and it tends to just work.

Do not use the "H.265+" option. "+" and "Smart Codec" options are not fully compatible with Blue Iris.

I would NOT install code Project AI until you get used to just BI its's.
If you purchase cameras with AI builtin, such as Dahua and HIkvision offers, then in most case's you would not need CodeProject AI at all.
Take the time to read through the BI help file.
