New LED streetlights!

... In our region we had thousands of them turn purple / strobe due to some kind of defect.

The defective fixtures were all covered under manufacturer warranty but the labor to replace them was ridiculous.
....
They are turning purple all over my area as well. Slowly being replaced but they are like black lights in the streets, making anything white glow like at halloween. I was told there was a coating on them that made the white light but it faded or something to that effect and they turn purple. The manufacture must be losing tons of money for replacement.

In our city they had to kill several miles of road. As they caused a whole bunch of people that were prone to seizures to have an episode. :(

Typically the strobe effect is actually a failure indicator that is supposed to be on a rotating timer.

I guess that part didn’t work either as they all strobes endlessly.

Some of them incorporated a remote control but obviously that didn’t work either because they had to kill the power to the entire line! :smash:

The new ones are completely different in shape and size with a lens refractor that appears to be wider in light spread vs the other.

Guess I’ll see how they perform when the mercury drops to -48’C!

Impressive to say the least relating to the light output. :thumb:

Our city is approximately at 94% all LED now.

It’s safe to say the use of LED lighting does save energy if properly specified. In our region we had thousands of them turn purple / strobe due to some kind of defect.

I submitted a trouble ticket in late 2022 and they only just replaced / repaired the light fixture in August 2024!

Regardless, our Main Street lights are no where as bright as yours! Than again the poles are more than 50 - 75 feet high.

The ones that line the side streets are about 20-25 feet tall with that old school British lantern decor.

I happened to watch this video the other evening:

He goes into a lot of technical detail about how different LEDs are coated with phosphor and then goes on to replace the phosphor on the LEDs of a lamp that's gone purple. Not too labour intensive but we all know governments would like to spend money rather than repair. An industrious person would buy the defective lamps on the cheap and put in some time to replace the phosphor to resell the units.

Damn it. They didn't turn the street lights on tonight.

Today they replaced the lights on the other street my houses faces. This will really blow up the video on my other 4K/X. But the lights have to be on for that to happen. Maybe tomorrow.

A neighbour commented that maybe I don't have to turn my runway lights on anymore. Then we both chuckled. 1300+ MW generation deficit today. My lights aren't going anywhere.

Okay, so they didn't turn the streetlights on. But always looking for the positive, this was a test of the effects of the new lights being off with how I dialed in the 4K/X for the new streetlights. Still getting great results. I guess the tweaking (of the camera, not meth) made me take another look at the settings. Getting great face detail of people on the sidewalk and very decent (for the distance on a 2.8mm lens) of people in the street with only my lighting.

Of course, I'm still anxious to see the results from my other 4K/X on the street with the lights that they installed yesterday.

I see that the trash has been picked up across the street.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! It's streetlight or garbage collection! You DON"T get to choose!

It seems that they're not sending the regular garbage trucks around. Instead, they come by every 5 or 7 days with a bobcat and large truck to scoop it up and take it away.

God, I hope the streetlights come on this evening.

Truly a thing of beauty. In the morning, I'll upload pics without streetlights and with the old streetlight. And videos. Won't tweak the camera tonight as I'm wiped out from relocation and replacing a 2431-S-S2 with a 5449 dual lens for people counting. It's one of the least used options from I see on this forum.

Oh, and started my slow-motion rewiring on the cams on the front of my house due to the corrugated tubing coming apart from the sun and rain. I have two 4 port POE extenders so I only have to run a fraction of the cable that I did. 6 cams if we include the VTO. 5 cables now as I'm running two cams off of a POE multiplexer. And will be using proper PVC tubing this time. Can't be rewiring every 4 years, now can we?

Okay, these are the pics from the other 4K/X. The lighting went up Monday and then they didn't turn the streetlights on that same night

But they came on last night and it was a thing of beauty. If they'd only both to trim the damn trees, we'd have even more light.

Very happy with this (updated) lighting. Hopefully they can keep the lights on at night.

This is with no lights:

The SD1A404XB-GNR which does face detection 24/7 got some very decent shots at a distance of people walking under the lamp. Settings need some tweaking. This cam is also going to be relocated lower than it is now. It gets people walking up the sidewalk and lowering it should get me even more results.

Yeah that’s what I’m starting to think. Between his runway lights and the new LED streetlights, it’s overloading the National grid.

* This didn't get posted yesterday. Ah, blackout drinking. Fun what I can remember of it *

I came here to say this! Ah, island living!

They're trying to bring power back for the 3rd time. Instead of trying to recreate the national grid, they're doing small "microsystems".

Neighbours have power now. My place should have power "any time now".

My glass is looking a bit empty.

Must go.
