Next step to building a system?

Getting the hang of it

I recently picked up a Laview Panda LV-PC902F2-W thanks to a post I saw by fenderman on a deals site.

I am trying to figure out if there is a versatile item(s) to add to my arsenal. Here is what I currently have:

  • Laview Panda LV-PC902F2-W
  • ailing Foscam 8904w
  • Synology Ds211j with a 5 year old 1.5TB and a 4 year old 3TB drive. I feel like running cam streams to them will increase the risk of failure of these drives. I found it the other day, but I can't currently find the specs on how many MP it can support. It comes with 2 camera licenses.
  • I have 3 Crucial M4 128GB SSDs in the mail and (5) 16GB SSDs that can be used if needed.

I currently have 2 cameras hooked up to my nas. The constant activity on the drives concerns me. They have precious data I would like to protect

I would like to be able to record motion events to monitor the outside of the house and keep my wife feeling safe when I am traveling for work. The Laview is currently helping me keep an eye on our puppy. It has been a great help to stop him when he is getting into trouble.

So, with my old storage, I would like to add a new drive as well as some sort of device that can handle cameras - or let the old drives or SSDs run in the DSS211j - but, it won't make sense to pay for a license when I am ready to add a third camera as I don't think it can handle the throughput. Should I add another Synology (maybe used)? It seems like they might be more expensive than other options. Maybe an Intel NUC or similar small form factor PC? I could hook external storage to it if needed. I was thinking of buying a WD Elements 5TB. That drive could come out of the enclosure or stay.

Blue iris vs $60 per cam (there was a software that I saw mentioned that is much more efficient than Blue IRIS - Aruba?). Would that run with a low end Intel NUC?

So, if I want to add storage and add the capability to add another camera or two in the future, what would you recommend?

Thanks in advance! I appreciate the knowledge here! I hope my windy post makes sense.

Welcome to the form..the constant drive activtiy is not a problem....the drives can handle it..you should have an offsite backup of your family photos regardless...
If you want something that will run on an nuc, then you can simply use hikvisions ivms4200 (will work with your laview but not foscam or other brands) and toss the foscam in the trash...
If you dont need more than 5 days of storage then milestone xprotect is free...otherwise there is a license fee..
Personally I prefer blue iris..yes you will need a more powerful pc, but to me its worthwhile..if you are just going to have 5 or so 2mp cameras, an i5-haswell for 300 bux is all you need...dell outlet or hp on ebay....

Thanks for the helpful tips Fenderman! And thanks for the welcome!

If I set out to use ivms4200, what specs have you seen work well? I will try it briefly on my gen 2 core i3 work laptop. I am looking at this from my phone - they may have specs listed on their website, I'll have to check.

And yes, I am not too concerned about the Foscam. It sucks.

I have read about a hack where you can make a Synology write to an external drive. I may try that to see how it works.

How many cameras do you intend to run in total? how many megapixels each?

I haven't dug in to figure out how many MPs I need/want to get to. The 902 has 2MP and seems pretty good. So from that, maybe I would shoot for 2-3MP? 3 cameras near term and 4-5 in total.

You should be able to run all that on your laptop if you use ivms...if not for 300 dollars you can have an excellent dell optiplex or hp elitedesk i5-haswell.

My laptop travels with me on a daily basis so it can't be the host, but that gives me a good idea on where to start.

I saw a J1900 on uh, that deals site the other day. That give me an idea that it probably wouldn't cut it with ivms.

Yeah, the low end machines are not worth it. It may be sufficent for ivms...but I dont know how much headroom you will have. If you are going to buy dedicated system, get a business class system with an i5 haswell for 150 more...its only 300 total..this will also the you move to another vms like blue iris if you dont like ivms...

Arg! I just wrote a reply and firefox crashed. Lost my typing.

I see that Broadwell chips are being released very soon. I thought about waiting but I have read that this won't cause a price drop on Haswells.

I have been looking for haswell i5s under $300 and I am not seeing anything. I would be fine with anything from a NUC to something with room for 1 2.5" and one 3.5". I have regular sata 128gb ssd and 16gb msata ssd. Dell has this:

Inspiron 3647 Small Desktop

Processor: Intel Core 4th Generation i5-4460S Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.40 GHz)
Windows 8.1
500 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
4 GB DDR3 1600MHz
Tray load DVD Drive (Reads and Writes to DVD/CD)
Dell Outlet Inspiron 3647 Small Desktop

I see this Elite Desk 800 on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Elitedes...658?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4196cd6232

Besides shooting for $300, I am having a hard time deciphering how much hdd space is in these cases.

Thanks!
John
