Hi, just became a member - hope to learn from posts plus from members.

Im looking for my first system & wonder if a link to the Costco website would be allowed to start with.

Is it?

Do it bro...and welcome!

Welcome to the forum. Yes it is. If you search the forum for costco, you will find discussions on many of the systems there.

Thanks for the welcome & the answer to the question.

Here is what I'm considering;
http://www.costco.com/Lorex-8-Chann...with-130'-Night-Vision.product.100290772.html

please keep in mind that it will be my first system.

Im simply looking for a quality, high definition system that will alert me when any of the cameras detect motion.

I still want to record anything that did not trigger the cameras - like who is not picking up their dogs' "package" on our sidewalk/yard.

May I ask for feedback on the system? Thank you.

Forget about reliable motion detection from the cameras...

Do you mean like motion detection is bad on these specific ones? Or that feature sucks in general on any brand?

All of them. It will cause way to many false alerts....you can try recording 24/7 and really setting the motion detection to a high threshold.

I see. Well, that gets that out of the way on that feature, right?

May I ask for your opinion of the system in the link? I won't get offended.

Its a good system made by dahua. Some things to note, is that bullet cameras with the IR leds around the lens are prone to spider webs that affect IR night vision. You can eliminate that by using Turret style cameras though none are offered by costco.
If you want better motion detection control and better alert options consider running a pc with blue iris software.

Couple of reasons I'm considering it besides the features, is the discount, the after discount price & Costcos return policy if I'm not satisfied with the system.

Can you explain "running a pic with blue iris software"? Is that on top of the nvr? Or replacing the nvr?

it replaces there nvr....
you can buy the costco system and see if it suits your needs, if not simply return it.

Is there a video or procedure on the web on that pc & blue iris software? I'm curious what that entails.
You can download the demo from the blue iris website. Just install the software and it will provide a 15 day demo. The online videos are all old...they are for version 3.
Hikvision and dahua are comparable. Note that most hikvision being sold on amazon and aliexpress are not US region cameras. Firmware cannot be upgraded. Avoid them.

So, if it replaces the nvr, no point buying a complete setup, right? Better to buy the number of cameras then go with the pc + blue iris software? The nvr from a complete set like Costcos would just be a waste of money - or so it sounds that way.

You agree?

If you have 8 minutes to watch the video in this link ( https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SJYwIV2pqwQ ), I'd appreciate your opinion of what the guy says - especially about the cloud storage.
i skimmed through it..hes using BI4...Dont harp on cloud storage...desktop pcs are rarely if ever stolen...also a better solution would be to simply record simultaneously record to the drive in the pc and NAS. Or simply have full redundancy with a hidden NVR. I dont deploy any of these methods, its overkill.
