Hi all

I have been recommended to come over here by a guy on the QNAP (NAS) forums for some info on a Dahua camera.

Up until this morning I have been about to buy a Hikvision camera as a Christmas present ;)

DS-2CD2342WD It is a 4MP Exir camera and it's use will be to overlook our birdfeeders so we can watch what is going on when we are not in. I have been a bit concerned that the lens (4mm) on this camera will not have enough reach as the feeders are 15 feet or so away from where the camera will go. I then came across this Dahua camera and I read a review which sounded good. It will give me a closer picture at the 12mm end obviously.
Dahua IPC-HDBW2300R-Z Outdoor Zoom 3MP Dome Review

The question is, how much quality loss will I suffer doing from the highly rated 4MP Hikvision camera to this Dahua one ?

I know this is subjective but I would really appreciate any opinions

Thanks
Paul

For that price point I would consider the following instead.

Depending on where you live in the country and if you can mount this under your house eve here is a Dahua PTZ.
Dahua Mini Black Face PTZ (SD29204S-GN)

Here is a Dahua Starlight that has been getting a LOT of attention and great reviews here. You won't get the Pan/Tilt, but you do get the zoom.
Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

For what an HIK 6mm Turret would cost (which is prob. what you need based on your above description of what you want to accomplish) I'd go with a Dahua for sure.

Thanks zero-degrees :)

Those cameras sound good but unfortunately I need my camera by Christmas for a present and I think at first glance I would have to import your suggestions (I live in UK). Maybe I will go with my original choice and in the new year I can organise getting another better one and maybe ebay mine or use it somewhere else .....

thanks anyway - plenty of reading to do !

Also Zero Degrees, I notice that both these cameras are 2MP. Does this not imply worse performance than the 4MP Hik cameras or even the 3MP in my original post ?
