Playback stopped working; live view still works

I've got a DS-2CD2442FWD-IW that I'm accessing directly via a browser. I'm using the latest IE11 and have the HIK ActiveX control installed & enabled (v. 3.0.6.10).

When I go to Live View the ActiveX control loads and video plays as expected. On the Playback page the timeline across the bottom has the normal colored marking indicating when the camera recorded. Picking any such time and pressing play gives a generic "Playback failed" error.

Playback worked fine on the same system earlier this week and I have not changed anything in the camera's configuration. Any pointers how to go about troubleshooting?

Where are the recordings stored? (NAS, SMB/CIFS share, SD card, etc).
Is the destination still accessible?
That would be the first place to go looking.

SD card.

Figured out shortly after posting that it doesn't allow multiple access. A browser on another PC already had Playback open. After closing that browser playback immediately resumed working on mine.
