I'm a bit disturbed and frustrated trying to set up my new Starlight 5231R-ZE. After reading various threads, I installed Pale Moon browser (32 bit) and got to the point to install the plug in. My Internet Security went beserk with the following message...

So, where do I go from here. I initially tried using Chrome and went to use their plugin, but it did absolutely nothing.

Any suggestions as to how I can actually get to view my camera for the very first time.

As an aside, does anyone know why a plugin is needed to view a live feed from the camera in the first place. Why can't modern browsers just simply display the picture.

Very frustrating trying to get something to work that should just simply, work :(

I had that same issue and traced it down to the program, plug-in, not being widely used which makes it trigger AV warnings. I just shut off that portion of my AV, Norton/Symantec, installed, then re-enabled full protection. If you look up that warning, you'll see what I mean. As with anything, your own judgement comes into play.

I have yet to see a camera that doesn't need some kind of plugin to be viewed in any browser. Just a fact of video life.

You can always upload the plugin installer to virustotal.com

To use the chrome NACL app you have to launch the 'app' in chrome which results in a crappy browser window in chrome that you use to access the camera.

As for why browsers can just display it, it just isn't something they chose to support. There are so many different file formats and codecs that long ago a modular plug in system was conceived. Once upon a time web browsers could not play ANY media without plugins (like real player, windows media player, flash, java, silverlight, ad infinitum). The problem is all these plugins introduced tons of vulnerabilities and were poorly updated. So the name of the game became attack surface reduction, finding ways to reduce the ease with which someone could become infected by simply browsing a webpage. This combined with codec licensing and decisions by browser makers not to care about rtsp or the codec variants used in cctv is where we are now. Even little things like a browser with built in svg support have been exploited over the years. Even if browsers supported it, the cameras would need a firmware update to call on these functions in the browser. Eventually cameras will probably support HLS or MPEG-DASH and work without plugins, but we're years from that in most cases.

Hanwah makes some cameras that work without browser pluigns, Axis and some of the other higher end names might as well.

Or install Dahua's SmartPSS, it's free.
