I just installed a new dahua camera under my soffit.

Do I need a surge protector ? It might sound dumb and I might be misunderstanding.

I have it powered via POE. How does a POE surge protector work? Will POE still be passed through ? Assuming that is what passive means?

just trying to understand and if it’s needed?

I have never heard of a POE Surge Protector. There is a POE Injector though. It is used to inject power to the ethernet cable for a POE device that is run from a standard network switch (Non-POE switch).

This is an example:

What type of surge are you trying to protect. If it is from a lighting strike it will not work, a lighting strike is 300Kvolts. If it from an electric line surge, then the UPS on the POE switch should stop it.
