PoE Splitter questions

I have a camera that runs off PoE. I want to hook up an external 12v infrared LED. I want to split 12v off the Ethernet cable but still leave the power going to the camera. It is my understanding that PoE is 48v. I bought a active splitter that split out the 12v but it appears to drop the power to the camera. I also assume that a passive splitter just put the 48v though with no conversion.

What splitter do I need to get a 12v power lead off the Ethernet cable? Or is this not possible?

Your camera should run off 12v barrel plug, so use the 48v PoE to 12v Splitter to power both your IR and your camera, easy peasy.

attached is a photo of a harness using an alarm output to turn the IR on and off.. its powering a microphone, ir, the camera, and I have another 12v plug for a future motion sensor.

@nayr: Where you bought that splitter? It complies with IEEE 802.3af standard?

and the other part of that 'harness' would be something like this,
http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-1-to-4-P...Cable-5-5x2-1mm-for-CCTV-Camera-/141109536309
with one output hacked to power the cam with bare wire 12v+/-,
another hacked to only pass power when the cam's alarm output is triggered (for external IR)

depending on your cam (PTZ?) and other device (IR) power requirements,
you might need PoE+ or an external POE injector at the switch end...
