POE Switch

If you want more than about 16 ports, look at used enterprise-level managed switches on ebay. They are incredible deals. Just research the specs and make sure you get a newer "green" model, and enough POE power for your use, as some of the older ones are power hogs. Some of them have fairly loud fans. I'm running a 26 port Cisco POE switch, and have changed out the fans. At the other end of the spectrum, if fan noise is an issue, there are some 8-port fanless switches out there.

I would like to purchase a NVR5216-4ks2 and a PTZ1A225U-IRA-N from Andy, any recommendations on a POE switch to use. Thanks
ED - I have the setup you are looking to purchase. I found both the TP-Link switch (8 port) and the 24-port V7 Switches I have, not able to handle the power requirements even though they are both rated as POE+ switches. The PTZ1A225U-IRA-N would just continually reboot forever until it was unplugged. Ultimately, I went with an external POE+ power injector, made by Trend Net, and that works great. Just a thought on what that camera seems to require.

Does this take the place of a POE switch or does it go between the camera and the switch.

It goes between camera and non-POE.

Nice, thanks looney. Total of 123w which is double most of the others switches. Just off the top of your head, would 15w per port be fine for the 2mp Starlight cameras if all 8 ports were used?

That should be more than enough. In reality you'll probably be using around 5w per camera, if not less.

I'm looking for a decent 8 port switch and see this one recommended a few times. I am a bit concerned it only has 60w of total power which is pretty lame for 8 ports isn't it? Any recommendations on a reasonably priced switch that will actually be able to handle 8 cameras.

60w can handle 5 25x PTZ with IR lights. It depends on what you are installing.

Also that is POE+

If you want to spend more you can buy ones with 8 ports and more power.

As I narrow my poe+ switch choices, I have a question.
I noticed that Looney2ns referenced an unmanaged switch (i.e which could be controlled via router), yet I thought a managed switch could provide more control? As a credit to unmanaged switches, they are clearly plug and forget (in my environment).

Not sure what you mean by "controlled by router". If you want the most control and flexibility, then a managed switch is the only way to go.
