Awaiting my shipment from Andy, and curious if an SD card is recommended or required for the advanced features to work properly?

The SD card is not required, but it is highly recommended as a redundant storage option, as well as to playback triggers with AI/IVS rules on to see why it was triggered.

The ePTZ function will work live but to watch a recorded event of ePTZ you will need and SD card as BI or NVRs don't yet have that capability.
