Is it possible to use NVR (Hikvision) as a switch for a PC? I am trying to avoid getting another switch and since I will have available ports thought it might be a good idea to utilize them if possible. Thanks!

Sure it works. At least for the 76xxNI-E2/E4 where the LAN ports works as a 100 Mbps switch. While for the older series 76xxNI-SE/P is a different story - cannot power nothing but a Hikvision camera.

Interesting that power can be denied based on what's connected, even if it's a valid 802.3af device.
Does this mean there might be a means to remotely control a PoE port, for example to power-cycle a connected device. That would be a potentially useful feature.

I had an experience more than two years ago with the early 7608NI-SE/P models when I wasn't able to power nothing but a Hikvision camera. Then as I remember tried with a Vivotek PoE camera - it was not powered at all. Tried also to connect another switch or PC but the port didn't light up at all. So obviously those ports wasn't compatible with 802.3af.

Actually you made me curious, so I made some tests.
NVR: DS-7608NI-E2/8P/A, latest FW V3.3.4
I connected the following cameras on the PoE ports:
1. Vivotek IP7161. Result: Powered up normally, was able to get only the main stream working under Vivotek protocol.
2. CNB MGC6050F. Result: Powered up normally, was able to get the both streams working OK under ONVIF protocol.

So for me, it seems that integrated PoE ports works as 802.3af fully compatible.

It's hit and miss, 2 makes you tried worked. Many I have tried haven't. Having two successes doesn't mean you can conclude it's 100% 802.3af fully compatible!

I've tried different firmwares and different NVRs (DS-7608NI-E2/8P, DS-7108/SN-P) both don't work with the same cameras and do work with some.

OK, you might be right, I don't want to argue. I just made a quick test, and shared the result. However it's not recommended using Hikvision NVR with third party cameras because you can't get the their full functionality.
