For the past month, this NVR has started beeping for about 60 seconds, twice a day at very random times (sometimes at 4:30am in the morning).

The NVR has 2 hard drives, and I've run every available SMART and bad sector tests on both drives, and they always came back clean.

The admin interface offers a bunch of configurable conditions which should trrigger an audible alarm (such as HDD problems, Cam Disconnects etc), but these are all now disabled, yet still it beeps.

Theres nothing relevant in the event log for the nvr (viewed from the admin gui).

Any ideas? This NVR has been fine for 3 years and now suddenly its shitting the bed for no apparent reason

My firmware is a couple of minor versions out of date, but I cant even update the firmware, because the 'Browse' button no longer opens a file dialog in modern browsers.

These tests are quite broad-brush, and will show as 'OK' even when the drive has had to re-allocate failed sectors or is unable to complete an operation.
Unless you've already done so - dig down and check out the actual values of the SMART attributes for any counts that indicate the drive has encountered any errors.

Certainly I would have expected any errors to show in the system log.

Do I have a vague recollection that there is an option in the VGA/HDMI interface to issue a beep on an effect such as motion detection?
It's ages since I had one of that model, so not able to check.

I did check SMART and while it shows some error counters, they were very minimal and have not changed since I started monitoring it a couple of weeks ago.

I've since noticed the HDD led on the device itself is flashing though, something I hadnt noticed before because it was obscured by the rack casing.

Me too, but nothing. The LED is the only indication I have (and still beeping even though 'beep on HDD error' is disabled.

I cant upgrade the firmware because the web GUI is so outdated, and I cant even view live cams in the browser because it needs the obsolete plugin

Everything is suggesting I should just buy a new NVR plus a couple of drives, instead of wasting any more time trying to troubleshoot this one

Against what attributes?
These may indicate a failing HDD.

This will simply be read/write activity.

IE11 does still exist in Win10 and Win11, just a bit hidden.
Lots of posts here on how to gain access to it.
