I'm going to rent an apartment for several months. What type and brand of interior portable camera should I purchase that can do the following:

  • preferably hidden or disguised
  • capture video if someone enters apartment when I'm not there
  • doesn't require a paid service
  • portable, no mounting that requires damaging walls
  • local and remote storage
  • probably will take a cat for company so triggering motion detection may be an issue
  • not sure what type of Internet is available at apartment
  • I could leave a locked Windows PC on, in the apartment, while I'm away.
  • I do have a remote home lab with public, static IP's that could be used for remote storage
So is there anything on the market like this? I won't have a robust firewall solution in the apartment so is there a privacy and security concern when adding this type of camera to a simple network?

Thanks in advance for any advice :-)

Just an FYI, the description of being "static" isn't what allows remote access via WAN it must be "public" (exposed to Internet and accessible via WAN).
A non-static or "dynamic" IP can be "public" and remotely accessible via WAN and is generally facilitated by use of a DDNS.

I'm getting close to the move-in date.

So what's a good budget, indoor, camera with night vision and motion detection? Best bang for the buck without paying for a monthly service.

I'm not concerned about 4K perfect imagery. My goal is having video that's clear enough to identify a person if they enter the apartment when I'm not there.

Has anyone tried those cheapo, hidden cams like these:

I'm considering setting up a firewall and put a cam on a subnet or bringing a WAP and creating a separate, guest WiFi account but are there any cams that can be connected to a PC via USB and be trusted?

Can Blue Iris alert on cell phone when motion is detected and start recording, only then? I want to record to the PC and duplicate, over the Internet to my remote SFTP server, in real-time, so that I have a backup in case the PC is stolen.
